How to take better photos of a newborn

Capturing the perfect shot of your newborn can be a challenge, especially when you’re trying to capture all those yawns, grins, and stretches.

As a new mom, I struggled with taking great photos of my baby boy. But after some trial and error, I learned a few tips that helped me to take much better shots. Here are three tips that I wish I knew back then and I hope they can help you too.

Tip 1: Light quality

Light is key. It is even more important to realize that now in winter when days are short and often dark. My biggest mistake was not having enough light when I took photos of my baby boy, who was born in summer.

Place your baby close to natural light. It can be on the bed, sofa, or even a blanket on the floor. Open the curtains fully if you have to and turn off all other artificial sources of light.

Tip 2: Light direction

Equally important (as I said light is the key!) First of all, make sure the baby is positioned in a way that the light falls from his/her side. Side lighting gives the most depth to photos and it is much easier to get the best results, even with an amateur camera. Secondly, make sure that the baby’s face is turned towards the light and not away from it.

Tip 3: Portrait lens

Use a portrait lens on your camera or portrait option in your phone. Even if you need to keep a bigger distance, which is often inconvenient, it really makes a difference. Without going into details, it is all because a shorter focal length of the lens causes more distractions.

And voilà, here they are, three pro tips that will hopefully help you take better photos of your little one.

In conclusion, capturing the perfect shot of your newborn can be a challenge, but with these tips, you’ll be able to take great photos in no time. Happy snapping! 😊
